Outreach Coordinator
Care about the environment? Thinking about a career in the environment or education? Curious about what’s being done to save the Chesapeake Bay? Want to engage your mind and get your hands dirty to help Save the Bay?
If so; you’re invited join Cacapon Institute, a small nonprofit on the leading edge of what’s “new, now, next” in watershed science and education to protect and restore rivers and watersheds of the Chesapeake Bay.
Cacapon Institute seeks a full-time Outreach Coordinator. This is an entry level position, with opportunities for growth. CI staff will work closely with the Outreach Coordinator to develop the requisite skills, and comfort level, necessary for success.
Responsibilities: 1. Coordinate outreach for the Potomac Highlands Watershed School, our award winning online educational tool that promotes Meaningful Watershed Educational Experiences. MWEE’s are K-12 Project Based Learning activities supported by NOAA’s Bay Watershed Education & Training. 2. Coordinate outreach for the Potomac Watershed Partnership, a collaborative effort by federal, state, municipal, non-profit, and for-profit partners to restore the health of the land and waters of the Potomac River basin, thereby enhancing the quality of life and overall health of the Chesapeake Bay. 3. In addition, the successful candidate must be willing to learn a wide range of skills in support of CI’s programs that integrate watershed science and education including, but not limited to: field and laboratory data collection, public outreach and education, newsletter publishing, website design, and media and fundraising campaigning.
Requirements: • Bachelors degree (or equivalent). • Exceptional coordination and outreach skills. • Possess good “people skills” & have a desire to travel. • Demonstrate fluid computer skills. • Have reliable transportation and be able to pass a background check.
Salary: $23,000-$26,000 with benefits & travel allowance.

Education Coordinator
Friends of Deckers Creek (FODC) is seeking an Education Coordinator to assist with environmental education programming and to mentor FODC’s Youth Advisory Board. The Education Coordinator will partner with FODC’s Executive Director, Fairmont State University, and the NASA Educator Resource Center on an Improving Teacher Quality grant. This grant program will include a week-long teacher training in hands-on watershed science and problem-based learning (August 2-6), two full follow-up days in GIS (October 9) and Save Our Streams certification (March 25), and three in-classroom follow up days through out the school year to assist teachers in the implementation of these skills.
The Education Coordinator will also serve as an adult mentor to FODC’s award-winning Youth Advisory Board (YAB). YAB is the youth voice for FODC. They hold monthly business meetings, elect officers, attend leadership trainings, and brain storm community service-learning ideas and write small grants to see them through. YAB service-learning projects have including hosting the annual Skate Jam, rain barrel and storm drain marking workshops, stream sampling, garden planting, WV Youth in Government, anti-litter campaigns, etc.
This will be a temporary part-time position beginning in early July 2010 and extending at least through the completion of the ITQ program (April 2011). We are estimating the position requiring approximately 10 - 15 hours a week. Pay is $15-20/hr. dependent upon experience.
Friends of Deckers Creek request that applicants have experience and considerable knowledge in secondary science education, knowledge of service-learning, an interest in environmental education, knowledge of stream processes, ability to partner with numerous stakeholders, and commit to the full term of the program. Applicants must be available in July 2010, commit to a full-time week August 2-6, be flexible in their future work schedule, and be willing to work evenings and weekends when necessary.
Duties include training sessions in service-learning and stream monitoring protocols, helping to train teachers in these methods, assisting teachers implement these skills in the classroom, collaboration with numerous community partners, mentoring FODC’s YAB through business meetings and service-learning projects, and grant writing for future education programming. Future education programming may include in-classroom lessons, after-school programs, summer camps, stream sampling, etc.
