The Mountain Institute is pleased to offer three Professional Development Workshops this summer to teachers and interested citizens. Learn, relax, and enjoy the beauty of The Mountain Institute’s Spruce Knob Mountain Center, located in West Virginia. TMI provides hands-on outdoor learning opportunities that stimulate students’ curiosity, understanding, and retention. Grant funding is available for WV Public School Teachers, other parties are more than welcome to attend for a modest fee. July 18-21st: Reading the Landscape: An interdisciplinary program geared towards science teachers of grades 5-12, but also open to interested citizens. Workshop Highlights: · Comprehensive overview of forest and watershed systems and their interactions · Field-based, hands-on, investigative activities · Classroom based materials to complement field based topics · Half and full day sampling of our program offerings
Full participation includes a pre-trip classroom visit and an overnight field trip to TMI’s Spruce Knob Mountain Center. Programs are designed to fit classroom needs, with teachers selecting from half day activity options including: plant kingdom investigation, karst topography study, insect or amphibian investigation; habitat comparison, stream analysis, soil study, orienteering, riparian zone restoration, or two day geology exploration. Feel free to come just for the workshop, or plan a field trip with your class as well! Workshop cost is $450 (lodging, meals, materials, and instruction included).
